A FANTASTIC GARDEN

Image
For our First unit in Food, we discussed mayn topics, such as. ...  And we visited ....   And I learned....  etc et cetc After all these incredible learning opportunities, it's time to put together our own garden plan!  And so I found a nice little spot in my backyard -- it's actually a little wagon where I could plant the garden -- and designed my own garden.   The first thing to calculate is the area of my garden bed.  It's a simple rectangle, so the area is A = 4 x 2.5 = 10square feet.  The volume is V= l x w x h = 4 x 2.5 x 8 = 80 square inches.  Lastly, I wanted to weigh the soil, so I weighed a small amount in a cup (which was 5 cubic inches).  That weighed 4 ounces, so 80/5 = 16, so my garden is 16 times bigger, or 4 x 16 = 64 ounces. Now that I have measured out my garden, time to select plants!  Now I love fresh vegetables, which are ANNUAL plants, or plants that only grow for one year.  In particular, I wan...

CHICAGO -- My kind of Town!

Our final unit in Water class we really ran out of time -- so we really only had a chance to talk about greenhouse gases & air pollution, select a city from around the world, and research some information about the city & use the math concepts of slope & graphs to analyze things. My city is Chicago!  My adopted home city.  So let me share with you some information about Chicago and hope you can learn some things about the city, and its climate and pollution. As you can see, there is a positive slope with the air pollution in Chicago.  We can do better to protect our city, and the air we breathe!   I hope that as members of our community we can prioritize the decisions that will move us in the direction of cleaner air. THE SOUND WALL

Craziest thing ever.  Yesterday, I heard the loud, deep sound of someone crashing a drum.  Closing my eyes, I heard the sound of the drum echo off a wall, the faint rumbles still audible seconds after the drum was struck.   Moments later, again:  BOOOOM.  Again, the echoes.  My eyes closed, the echos seemed hollow... like I was standing in an empty concrete building. Then, opening my eyes, I was disoriented by the sight of bright, blue skies.  Outlines of skyscrapers reached up above me.  Wait -- what?  What happened to the wall that had just been encircling me? What it was, what the 'echo' I was hearing -- that I thought was the sound of a drum echoing off of a distant wall -- was resonance , or, according to Merriam-Webster dictionary, " the intensification and enriching of a musical tone by supplementary vibration".  In short: somehow, placement of the speakers around me managed to give the drum sound "supplementary vibration"....

GMO: POSITION PAPER!

Welcome to my final AP for Unit 3 (like a quick, week long unit!) in our Food class.  We started by talking about an American Scientist, his name was Norman Borlaug.  He introduced new, disease-free wheats to India and solved hunger there.  Becuase of his new wheat, look at the yields of wheat in India since 1960: From his work they have much better yields, that is critical for solving hunger!  We also discussed how plants reproduce, and we did a little bit of probabilty but we didn't have much time to study that.  And we went to a farmer's market to talk to farmers about food and organic food and stuff.  It was really fun to eat lunch with the class in the nice weather! I believe that GMO food is positive for the world.  Hunger is a serious issue, and look at the graph above.  GMO food can help increase yields and make for more food for everybody.  Some people will argue that GMO foods are not safe, since we don't understand the long t...

LENTILBALLS (TM)

For our food class this term we have beeen studying lots of interest and very important things. For instance, we did lots of baking. And we needed to learn some math and fractions becuase a lot of recipes have fractions. One thing that I enjoyed was seeing a farm in a restaurant. It didn't look like a farm, it looked someone's garden but really big. They called it a farm anyways so thats cool. We talked about leaveing agents emulsifers and protein. The major nutriitions are proteins, fats, and carbohydprates.   For our Action Project, we need to substitutie something in a recipe. Some people are substituting a emulsifeer. Some people re substituting a leaveing agent. I will do a substitution of meat with lentils instead.   for my experiment, I used the following meatball recipe: 1lb lean (at least 80%) ground beef 1/2cup Progresso™ Italian-style bread crumbs 1/4cup milk 1/2teaspoon salt 1/2teaspoon Worcestershire sauce 1/4teaspoon pepper 1small onion, finel...
